    • STANTON MICHAEL RICKEY MINI-BIO

STANTON MICHAEL RICKEY was born in San Francisco, CA on 30 Oct 1920 to THOMAS BOYD RICKEY (b. 5 Jun 1892, San Francisco - d. 3 Jul 1985, Novato, Marin Co, CA) & LAURA VIRGINIA REARDON (b. 5 Jan 1894, Boston, Suffolk Co, MA - d. 7 Jan 1968, Kentfield, Marin Co, CA). His family moved across the Golden Gate Bridge to Marin County when he was 3 years old. Having joined the U. S. Marine Corps Reserve in 1938 while still in high school, Stanton was called to Active Duty in Nov 1940. He served in the initial Marine Expeditionary Force sent to the South Pacific in Jan 1942, then was returned to enter Army Aviation Cadet pilot training. As a 15th Air Force B-17 Aircraft Commander, he flew 27 combat missions in Europe, and participated in the first "shuttle raid" to the Soviet Union. He was pilot of one of the 483rd Heavy Bombardment Group's 14 B-17's shot down during the climactic aerial battle of Memmingen, Germany on 18 July 1944. Captured while attempting to cross into Switzerland, he remained a POW until liberated by advancing Soviet troops on 1 May 1945.

After WWII, Stanton flew for United Airlines and also worked as a flight instructor, construction superintendent and salesman. With the onset of the Korean War, he was recalled from the USAF Reserve on 18 Oct 1950. Later, he was selected for Regular Air Force status and remained on Active Duty until retirement as a Lt. Colonel on 1 Aug 1971.

After his 1938 graduation from Tamalpais Union High School in Mill Valley, CA, Stanton attended College of Marin for one year. He later received an AA degree from Grant Technical College in Sacramento in 1946; BA from San Francisco State in 1953; MA from George Washington University, Washington, DC in 1955. The latter education prepared him for Air Force duty in Intelligence as a Strategic Target Analyst and Mission Planner. In this capacity he served at Headquarters Far East Air Force, HQ Pacific Air Forces, HQ Tactical Air Command, USAF War Games Division in the Pentagon, HQ 7th Air Force in Viet Nam, and the joint command staff of CINCPAC in Hawaii.

Stanton married his high school sweetheart, HELEN PATRICIA SHEEHY on 10 Apr 1943 in Pine Bluff, Arkansas. Together, they shared wartime experiences, traveled extensively and, over a span of 44 years, lived in numerous localities throughout the USA and Japan. They were the parents of one son and four daughters and now have eleven grandchildren and four great grandchildren. Helen passed away on 11 June 1987 in Honolulu, Hawaii, where they made their home for over 25 years.

Stanton has been deeply involved in genealogical research with the goal of writing the history of both the STANTON and RICKEY Families. He has documented over 26,000 names of Rickey Descendants, and published a quarterly 10 page Rickey Family Association newsletter since 1990. It is sent to a mailing list of over 600 individuals, libraries and historical/genealogical societies throughout the USA and Canada, as well as England, Ireland and Australia. He is currently sharing his hobby with his second wife, the former ADELINE "ADDIE" SMITHSON DYAL. In past years they spent the warmer months traveling throughout the country in a motorhome; hosting RICKEY reunions, sightseeing and researching in museums and libraries, and pouring over ancient records at obscure county courthouses. They resided in Salem, Oregon until moving to Dallas, Oregon in 2007. Winters are spent at their second home at Village of Apache Wells in Mesa, Arizona.

Addie & Stanton are very computer oriented. They travel with "His & Hers Laptops". His marriage proposal and her acceptance was documented on the computer. The dialogue went something like this: "Darling, will you consent to be my wife. Please signify your assent by hitting key "Y", then "ENTER" into a lifetime of wedded bliss! ALOHA NUI LOA. Her reply was "Y", but only if the "rule of thumb" applies !". They lived happily ever after, because STANTON promised never to beat ADDIE with a stick larger than his thumb!!! They were married on 1 Dec 1988 at the Fern Grotto, Island of Kauai, HAWAII.
