    Notes
    • !BENJAMIN BURT IV was one of the first settlers of Potter Co, PA. In Spring,
1810, at age 30, he came from Elmira, NY without his family to the present site
of Burtville. There he built a log cabin, cleared some land, raised some
potatoes and a crop of corn. In the Fall, he went back to NY for his family.
After storing his corn in a safe place, BENJAMIN and his brother, DAVID BURT,
returned to Chemung to spend the winter and ready the family for moving. He
bought a horse and made a frame to carry his wife and 2 children ELISHA &
JOANNA, while he walked. It was a week long journey by way of Tioga Creek
through Ansonia and up Pine creek to the Allegheny River. They found the
log house in bad shape and most of the corn carried away by squirrels. The
nearest store and granary were 75 miles away at Jersey shore.
Fall, 1811 was a bad season. All they had was a little corn and wild meat.
That winter, his father-in-law, ISRAEL RICKEY of Chemung Co, NY, hearing they
were starving, sent a wagon load of provisions by Benjamin's brother, ISRAEL
BURT. In 1815 BENJAMIN and a neighbor dammed the river and erected the first
sawmill in Potter Co at Burtville. Besides making all their clothes, shoes,
etc, he found time to lay out the boundaries of several townships.
Benjamin engaged in the lumber trade, rafting down the river to Pittsburgh, and
returning with a canoe load of supplies. Soon there was plenty of work for his
sawmill. Settlers came upriver with flatboats and packed their goods across th
Portage to Canoe Place, where Benjamin made canoes for them from white pine
      logs.
